Watch "GW170817: So Many Staggering Insights About Our Universe"

The third video in the series talks about the discovery of gravitational waves from a binary neutron star merger, made by LIGO and Virgo in August 2017. This was LIGO's 6th discovery, but it was just as important as its first. This event produced an electromagnetic signal -- a gamma-ray burst -- that was detected by many instruments and observatories around the world, and announced a long-awaited arrival of multi-messenger astronomy.

The video features LIGO Lab's David Reitze, Rainer Weiss, and Alex Urban. Also featured are France Córdova (NSF) and members of the LIGO Scientific Collaboration and Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope. Watch the video:
