LIGO Team Wins Royal Astronomical Society's 2017 Group Achievement Award

The LIGO Team is the winner of the 2017 Group Achievement Award by The Royal Astronomical Society. The award citation reads: "The direct detection of gravitational waves by the LIGO detectors situated in Livingston and Hanford in the US is an epochal event in physics and astronomy. This extraordinary achievement is the culmination of many decades of work [...] This achievement reveals a new way of 'seeing' the Universe [...] This discovery represents a historic advance of scientific, technological and engineering achievement."

Update Jul 22: At the Society's National Astronomy Meeting in Hull, UK, LSC members Francesco Pannarale (Cardiff University), Martin Hendry (University of Glasgow) and Mike Cruise (University of Birmngham) accepted the Award on behalf of the LSC.
